Lammerts Thrives in the Cold

Cold weather had a contributing effect on the outcome of the 1984 Ronde Van Vlaanderen. When the first of the steep cobbled climbs began the lead group had dwindled. Only 40 riders hit the Koppenberg together.

A sever rider breakaway led by Irishman Sean Kelly formed on the flat roads leading to Geraardsbergen. Panasonic domestique Johan Lammerts broke away over the Muur de Grammont and didn’t look back.

The chase was hard but fruitless. Johan Lammerts rode into Meerbeke for the solo victory.
